42CrMo steel is a high-strength alloy known for its excellent toughness, strength, and hardness. When subjected to quenching and tempering, it demonstrates enhanced fatigue resistance and impact toughness. Notably, even after quenching and tempering, it does not exhibit significant temper embrittlement, maintaining good low-temperature impact toughness.
Because of these properties, 42CrMo steel is widely utilized in the manufacturing of medium to large plastic molds that require a combination of strength and toughness. The material is also commonly used in critical components that demand higher strength and larger cross-sectional areas than those made with 35CrMo steel. Applications include piston shafts, gears, cylinder rods, springs, engine hydraulic cylinders, and large petroleum drill attachments (ranging from 1200 to 2000 mm), among others.
