WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN S45C STEEL AND C45 STEEL ?

Table of Contents

Differences Between S45C Steel and C45 Steel

S45C Steel

S45C is a medium-strength carbon steel, widely used in the manufacturing of shafts, studs, keys, and various mechanical components. This material, governed by the JIS G 4051-2009 standard, offers excellent machinability and weldability, making it a popular choice in industrial applications. S45C is available in various forms such as square bars, round bars, and flat bars, and can undergo multiple heat treatment processes to enhance its mechanical properties.

Mechanical Properties of S45C

569 MPa (Standard)
686 MPa (After Quenching and Tempering)
Yield Strength:
343 MPa (Standard)
490 MPa (After Quenching and Tempering)
Poisson’s Ratio: 0.27-0.30
Brinell Hardness: 160-220 HB (Annealed)
S45C Equivalent Grades:

Chemical Composition of S45C:

Carbon (C): 0.42% – 0.48%
Silicon (Si): 0.15% – 0.35%
Manganese (Mn): 0.6% – 0.9%
Phosphorus (P): 0.030% Max
Sulfur (S): 0.035% Max
Heat Treatment of S45C:

Full Annealing: 800 – 850°C

Quenching Medium: Water or Oil
Tempering: 550 – 660°C
Melting Point: ~1520°C

C45 Steel

C45 is a medium carbon steel, non-alloy in nature, and is preferred when greater strength and hardness are required in applications where the material is typically used in its “as rolled” condition. Known for its extreme size accuracy, straightness, and concentricity, C45 steel minimizes wear in high-speed operations, making it ideal for precision components.

Chemical Composition of C45

Carbon (C): 0.43-0.50%
Silicon (Si): 0.17-0.4%
Manganese (Mn): 0.50-0.8%
Nickel (Ni): Trace elements
Heat Treatment of C45:

Soft Annealing: Heat to 680-710°C, followed by slow cooling in the furnace to achieve a maximum Brinell hardness of 207.
Normalizing: 840-880°C, followed by air cooling.
Hardening: 820-860°C, with subsequent quenching in water or oil.
Tempering: 550-660°C, followed by air cooling.
